A Clever Way to Make Money in Cambodia?

Lots of huge ugly road signs / billboards have started appearing in Kampot recently.

I remember this happened in Sihanoukville a few years ago too.

What’s interesting about these huge monstrosities is that they actually give the driver hardly any relevant or useful information.

In the photo below you will see that:

  • The first sign shows Phnom Penh to be forward (arguably useful).
  • The second arrow points down into the ground and details Chouk district which is basically on the road to Phnom Penh.
  • The third arrow shows a right turn to Takeo Province. This right turn occurs in about 1 hour.
  • The fourth sign tells you who to contact if you want to advertise on one of these billboards.
Now obviously the important information is what appears above the signs. The advert for some farming machinery. This takes pride of place and covers almost all of the top half of the ‘road sign’.
I suppose some people somewhere came up with the idea of this type of advertising which can be cleverly disguised as useful information for motorists.
In truth it’s quite clever as the authorities can claim that they are improving the city while renting these plots and the advertising company gets to erect as many of these that they can find advertisers for.
Interestingly there is another one of these signs pretty much giving the same information about 400m before but this time advertising a mobile phone company.

You gotta make money, as long as the profits don’t line the coffers of some black Lexus drivers I’m fine with it — but that’s probably exactly where it goes.

Yes, I would have thought that was fairly likely.

    Pretty darned ugly

And, it’s a far cry from when driving thru chhuk town meant a drive-by beside a vast muddy puddle running the entire length of the market.

Ha! That’s right. I think we’ll be seeing more and more of these ‘structures’ appearing all over the country.
